Successfully involve faculty in your programming

General Tips on a Successful Faculty friend Program:

  • Ask Brandy Shott about potential faculty members in a certain field
  • Speak with upperclass residents about possible faculty
  • Discuss expectations with your faculty member
  • Maintain communication with the faculty friend
  • Plan ahead
  • Plan activities the residents will be excited about
  • Have a variety of programs with the faculty friend

Ways to Establish and Maintain a Good Working Relationship:

  • Already have ideas when you contact the faculty friend
  • Meet informally first, before introducing the faculty to residents
  • Remember to welcome them enthusiastically
  • Make sure the faculty is excited about the program
  • Find out the faculty’s interests outside the classroom
  • Plan programs together

 Dealing With Some Common Anxieties:

  • Time conflicts with the faculty:
  1. Give the faculty an advance notice
  2. Set up good mutual times
  3. Possibly have more than one faculty member
  • Faculty Friends that are not impressed with programs:
  1. Ask for advice and suggestions
  2. Find common interests
  3. Get student and faculty input on programs
  • Residents are uncomfortable with the faculty
  1. Plan icebreakers
  2. Have small group meetings
  3. Try to find faculty with common interests as your residents
