What is RHAC?

The Residence Halls Advisory Council (RHAC) was established in 1981 as the official campus-wide association for undergraduate residence halls at OSU. RHAC membership is comprised of a senator from the National Residence Halls Honorary, the Black Student Association and each of the hall and complex councils. Additionally, the assistant vice president of Student Life serves as an ex-officio non-voting member.

RHAC elects the executive officers (President, Vice President for University Relations, Vice President for Finance and Administration, Director of Education & Student Advocacy, Director of Diversity & Wellness, and National Communications Coordinator) during the spring quarter of each year. The new executive officers of RHAC assume their responsibilities on June 15 of each year.

What does RHAC do?

The mission of the Residence Halls Advisory Council is to serve The Ohio State University undergraduate residence hall student population, striving to achieve the premiere residence hall experience. With this in mind, the organization functions as a communication link between residents and the residence and dining hall system. RHAC meets every Tuesday evening during the academic year. These meetings provide a forum for residents to express their concerns, share their activities and ideas, develop leadership skills, and plan and coordinate university-wide programming and advocacy initiatives with fellow student leaders. RHAC is also a source through which administration can communicate goals and ideas and receive resident feedback.

RHAC also serves as a programming force within the residence halls. During each academic year, RHAC hosts programs with educational, diversity, wellness, community service and leadership themes. Some of RHAC’s past initiatives have included:

  • Ohio State Welcome Leader Late Night VIP Event
  • Get ‘Hyp’ with RHAC RA Event
  • Welcome Week Movie on the Oval
  • An Evening at the Columbus Museum of Art
  • Scarlet & Gray Sportsmanship Pledge
  • Wash out the Wolverines Laundry Drive
  • Presidential Leadership Dinner
  • COSI AfterDark
  • Black World History Month Kick-off Dinner

RHAC serves as a funding resource for residence hall organizations. Every quarter, each student pays a $13 Housing activity fee with their room fees. The $13 is split between RHAC, hall councils, and the Black Student Association (BSA).

Additionally, the Residence Halls Advisory Council works a national supplier (On-Campus Marketing) to coordinate the residence hall carpet and linens as well as Welcome and Finals Week Kit programs. Students and parents receive quarterly mailings regarding purchasing information for these programs.
